Lake Leather : At Home

This week our favourite Boss Lady headed off to the big smoke to source some amazing leather for our workshop from 'The Hide Merchant'.
Let's dive in and explore the fascinating world of animal hides, where style meets substance in a leathery fusion of past and present. The story begins long ago when our ancestors, the original leather workers, sought warmth and protection from the wild world by wrapping themselves in the hides of their prey.
Fast forward through the annals of time, and you'll find our more recent hunter-gatherer forebears, who knew a good thing when they saw it. Animal hides became the ultimate go-to material for their nomadic lifestyle. Functional tent covers, traditional water carrying bags, footwear and clothing - Leather is rugged, weather-resistant, and flexible, it was the perfect fit for their lifestyle.
But wait, the story doesn't end there. Animal hides, with their warmth and protective charm, found a new stage inside our permanent dwellings. They added a dash of style, becoming bed coverings, rugs, floor art, and wall hangings, making winter cozier and more comfortable, way before central heating became the showstopper.
Today, we're taking this timeless tale and giving it a modern twist. At Lake Leather, we're all about the hides! Step into our stores, and you'll find a sensational selection of tanned skins ready to zhoozh up your home – from animal rugs to wall hangings to chair liners, the options are endless.
Our star performers? Cow hides imported from South America. These aren't just any hides; they're the headliners we handpick for their electrifying colors, patterns, quality, and their flawless, blemish-free vibe. We do the hard work, so you only have one choice to make: which colour sets the right mood for your space today?!
Our lineup is in constant flux, but you can expect a wild mix that might include cow hides, merino sheepskins, double-face shearling sheepskins, Mongolian sheepskins, cushions, reindeer hides, zebra skins, springbok skins, and so much more. Our skins hail from all corners of the globe, each with a story of its own.
Our cow hides from our South American friends are perfection personified, inheriting their leather-tanning brilliance from their Spanish and Portuguese roots. The result? A premium selection of hides from Brazil and Argentina - a vivacious symphony of rich colours and silky soft hair.
Reindeer skins take us on a journey to Scandinavia, where these furry friends are farmed for their meat and multi-purpose hides. Just like cows and sheep, reindeer have been the backbone of cultures in colder climes. Their fur? Super-insulating, thanks to hollow shafts that are both lightweight and snug. While they might not be the right fit for floor rugs, they absolutely steal the show draped over your furniture.
Mongolian sheepskins are the soul of sophistication, with a light feel to the hand and soft crimped fibers that caress like angel's hair. Their unique character means they're not for brushing but are perfect for untangling any knots. And guess what? They're not just for decor; these crimped wonders often find themselves in the world of fashion.
Finally, let's turn up the volume with our exclusive collection of zebra and springbok skins, shipped directly from South Africa. These show-stoppers aren't just about style; they're about conservation too, as they come from culling overpopulated herds. Plus, they're locally tanned, making them a true taste of Africa right here in Tasmania.
So, you've seen the lineup, and it's ready to rock your space. Head on down to Lake Leather and discover a show shopping piece for your home.
